Tienda de Cafe–Another Cool Zona G Restaurant in Bogota

On Carrera 5 between Calle 70 and 70A is Tienda de Cafe (and there is another one in Usaquen, I hear), which has probably the funkiest decor of all the restaurants I go to in Bogota. (I don’t count Andres Carne de Res, since it’s in Chia–but even if I did, the Tienda would be competetion.)
The walls (and ceilings) are painted, every inch, with fantastic (meaning having to
do with fantasy) murals, and doors, floors, windows, stairs, just about every surface is covered with SOMETHING interesting. There are all kinds of eccentric-looking objects on mantelpieces, bars, tables, any surfaces available. One of the guys I work with who’s an artist is a friend of the owner and has had something to do with the decor, though he didn’t paint the murals.
The menus (meaning the menus themselves) are wooden and decorated with cutouts, and each is individually made. And the menu (meaning the dishes listed) is extensive. I don’t know if it can be classified, but there’s all kinds of meat, seafood, some pasta, salads, and lots of items that are kind of tapas-type selections, which is what I like in a restaurant. Last time there I ordered two types of grilled cheese (meaning blocks of cheese that had been cooked on the grill) covered with grilled shrimp. I didn’t actually know I was getting the shrimp, since I somewhow missed that part in the description, so it was kind of a bonus.
The restaurant is in an old townhouse, and has a porch with tables on front, and inside there are three floors for dining, with an equally funky bar space at the back of the first floor. The stairways are narrow, and the separate dining spaces are each kind of intimate, and different from each other.![]()
I’ve taken all kinds of people there, and the good thing is there’s something on the menu for everybody, no matter what kind of food you like. Prices are moderate, too. And, you can fascinate yourself just looking around, if the conversation at your table lags. Or, you can make conversation at your table by discussing the murals and other decor.
Overall, I like this place a lot because it’s for everybody and every occasion. It’s definitely a “nice” restaurant, but also casual, and you can go there for a big dinner that lasts most of the evening or also just stop in for half an hour to grab something quick.
